The Arts

About Ohana Martial Arts
Ohana which means "family" in Hawaiian, was opened in 2003 with the goal of building an Academy that focuses on the "Art" of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Filipino Kali. I sought to create an atmosphere that simulated the welcoming island vibe I experienced during my training days in Hawaii. Whether you are new to the arts or an experienced Martial Artist, Ohana offers an inviting environment where beginners are always welcome, and the mood is always laid back. We invite you to visit our Academy today and see for yourself.

The Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The Gracie family took the Martial arts world by storm when they dominated the first wave of "no holds barred events" held in the United States. This art originated in Brazil in the early 1900's and today is considered one of the most effective fighting arts in the world. The goal of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to nullify the strength, power and striking of an attacker by getting in close and taking the attacker to the ground. On the ground, the Jiu-Jitsu stylist steals the power and speed of his opponent by patiently gaining a dominant holding position and setting up a flow of finishing locks and chokes. This "gentle art" allows the practitioner to end an altercation without throwing a single strike.

The Art of Muay Thai and Filipino Kali

Ohana's Jeet Kune Do Concepts program is a functional blend of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing, Filipino Kali and Bruce Lee's JKD training concepts. The Jeet Kune Do program blends the explosive striking of Muay Thai, the elusive punching of Western Boxing, and the craftiness of Filipino Kali, with the fighting concepts of the late Bruce Lee. Our program takes a technical approach to training with an emphasis on developing "advanced" stand-up striking and stickfighting fundamentals.

Jiu-Jitsu Competition
Since 2004, Ohana students have successfully competed in a multitude of local, regional and national Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. We understand competition isn’t for everyone; but we do support the students that are inspired to test themselves on the competition mat. Ohana is proud to be part of Nova Uniao, a world renown Jiu-Jitsu team that has produced some of the most respected competitors in the sport, including Robson Moura, Renato “Charuto” Verissimo, BJ Penn, and Jose Aldo to name a few.

To be eligible to represent Ohana in Jiu-Jitsu competition, students are required to have a minimum:
-Four months of BJJ classes

Mixed Martial Arts "MMA"
Due to the high risk of injury involved in MMA training and competition, Ohana is very selective in who we allow to participate in these events. Students that have an aspiration to compete in MMA should first immerse themselves in the Ohana Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu program. The group classes will provide an incredible technical base of striking and Jiu-Jitsu to build a Mixed Martial Arts game upon.

Once you meet the training requirements for eligibility, you will be evaluated by Ohana Head Instructor Christopher Lund and his Jiu-Jitsu mentor Renato “Charuto” Verissimo.  Charuto has trained and trained with the elite of the sport. Charuto is a UFC veteran and had the privilege of taking BJ Penn to his Black Belt as well as cornering him in many UFC bouts.

To be eligible for an Ohana MMA evaluation, students are required to have a minimum:
-One year of Muay Thai classes
-Blue Belt in Jiu-Jitsu
